How to prevent a petrol tank from leaking:
Petrol tanks usually leak when there is an overpressure in the tank due to air and petrol expanding from heat. Take this into account by filling the tank up to a maximum of 70% and keeping the vent as open as possible. Also, try to keep the tank out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
When the vent is completely closed and the contents get warmer, the fuel will try to find a way out. This usually happens between the connection and the tank, halfway through the connection via the thread of the hose tail and/or between the hose tail and the fuel hose.
Leaks between the tank and the connection are generally solved by tightening the connection slightly to allow the rubber sealing ring to do its job.
Leaks halfway through the connection at the thread of the hose tail can be resolved by placing some PTFE tape in between, similar to how you would do with water pipe connectors.
Leaks between the hose tail and the fuel hose can be fixed by tightening the hose clamp/tie-wrap securely.
By following the above guidelines, the tank should no longer leak if all is done correctly.
