Preventing a fuel tank from leaking:
Fuel tanks usually leak when there is an overpressure in the tank due to air and fuel expanding from heat. Take this into account by filling the tank to a maximum of 70% and keeping the vent as open as possible. Also, try to keep the tank out of the sun as much as possible.
If the vent is completely closed and the contents heat up, the fuel will try to find a way out. Typically, this occurs between the connection and the tank, halfway through the connection via the thread of the hose union and/or between the hose union and the fuel hose.
Leaks between the tank and the connection are usually resolved by tightening the connection slightly so that the rubber sealing ring can do its job.
Leaks halfway through the connection at the thread of the hose union can be fixed by adding some Teflon tape in between, similar to what is done with water pipe fittings.
Leaks between the hose union and the fuel hose can be solved by tightening the hose clamp/tie-wrap securely.
By following the above steps, the tank should no longer leak if done correctly.
