Preventing Leaks in a Fuel Tank:
Fuel tanks often leak when there is an overpressure in the tank due to air and fuel expanding from heat. Prevent this by filling the tank up to a maximum of 70% and keeping the venting as open as possible. Also, try to keep the tank out of direct sunlight.
If the venting is completely closed and the contents heat up, the fuel will try to find a way out. This usually occurs between the connection and the tank, halfway down the connection via the thread of the hose tail and/or between the hose tail and the fuel hose.
Leaks between the tank and the connection are usually fixed by tightening the connection slightly so the rubber sealing ring can work effectively.
Leaks midway at the thread of the hose tail connection can be solved by adding some Teflon tape in between, similar to how you would with water pipe fittings.
Leaks between the hose tail and the fuel hose can be resolved by tightening the hose clamp/tie-wrap securely.
By following the above precautions, the tank should no longer leak if done correctly.
