Preventing Leaks in an Outboard Fuel Tank:
Fuel tanks typically leak when there is an overpressure in the tank due to air and fuel expanding from heat. Prevent this by filling the tank up to a maximum of 70% and keeping the vent as open as possible. Additionally, try to keep the tank out of direct sunlight.
If the vent is completely closed and the contents heat up, the fuel will try to escape. This usually occurs between the connector and the tank, halfway through the connection via the threaded portion of the hose tail and/or between the hose tail and the fuel hose.
Leaks between the tank and the connector are usually resolved by tightening the connector slightly to allow the rubber seal to work effectively.
Leaks at the threaded portion of the hose tail can be fixed by inserting some PTFE tape, similar to how you would with water pipe fittings.
Leaks between the hose tail and the fuel hose can be resolved by securely tightening the hose clamp/tie-wrap.
By following the above guidelines, the fuel tank should no longer leak if properly maintained.
